Ganderbal, Apr 28 (KNO): Residents of Gagangeer in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district are appealing to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to restore the Rezan-Gagangeer road, which has severely deteriorated since being downgraded after the opening of the new Sonamarg Tunnel. Once a crucial segment of the National Highway leading to the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg, the road is now neglected and plagued with potholes, craters and broken surfaces, locals told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). They said travelling along this stretch has become increasingly dangerous, especially during adverse weather conditions. “The road is in such terrible shape that vehicles struggle daily. Driving here feels like a nightmare, particularly when it rains,” a resident said. “The poor condition of the road is disrupting school transportation, emergency services and daily business activities.” Though the road is no longer the primary route to Sonamarg, residents said it remains essential for local connectivity and traffic related to tourism. They criticised the lack of maintenance and are demanding that the BRO, responsible for infrastructure upkeep in the area, urgently initiate repairs and macadamisation to prevent further deterioration. “This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about safety,” said another local. “The neglect is affecting our lives and livelihoods.”—(KNO)
